Subject: Swine influenza H3N2v in Michigan
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Public Health Muskegon County (PHMC) are reporting the state’s first variant influenza A virus H3N2 (H3N2v) infection in a Muskegon resident who was a swine exhibitor at the Muskegon County Fair, July 25-30, 2016. A respiratory specimen that tested presumptive positive for H3N2v will be sent to CDC for confirmatory testing. Two other individuals who were at the fair have tested PCR positive for influenza. Additional case finding is underway.
MDHHS was notified by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory that a pig shown at the Muskegon County Fair has tested presumptive positive for H3N2.
Please report any cases of influenza-like illness with exposure to pigs or fairs to your local health department and contact the MDHHS Division of Communicable Disease at 517-335-8165 with any questions.
