There is a new learning module series available for hospital emergency department PECCs (Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator) or sometimes called “pediatric champion”. These modules educate how PECCs impact each domain of pediatric readiness. Certification of Completion is available for each module. The 2 modules are accessible through the link below.

NPRP = National Pediatric Readiness Project & Peds Ready Assessment
The Peds Ready Assessment (last formally offered in 2021) is a tool which a hospital/ED may use anytime, to assess their overall readiness to care for ill and injured children. This is a national assessment based on updated guidelines and scored on a 100-point scale. Here are some pearls and updates about the NPRP and the Peds Ready Assessment:
  1. The next national and official assessment period is not anticipated until 2025 at the earliest (pending National EMSC leadership direction and new evidence to update the assessment). We are currently in a national QI Period – during this stage any hospital/ED can take another assessment.
  2. The Peds Ready Assessment:
  • Be sure to save the Score and Gap report upon submission You may take the assessment as often as needed (ex: to assess improvements since initiating a pediatric protocol or policy, starting a workgroup, etc.)
  • The scores are never shared, they are confidential to your organization. They are intended for only internal QI efforts, never to be used in a punitive manner.
  • The Peds Ready Score and Gap Report may be used to meet ACS Trauma requirements (please work with your trauma programs).
  • A hospital can have multiple PECCs - this is not a singular role! However, it is encouraged to have at least one ED nurse as a PECC + an ED physician or advance practice provider. Additionally, it is encouraged to include the hospital Trauma Program Manger and/or provider in the pediatric readiness work and/or as a PECC! Other roles to consider adding to your Pediatric Readiness team: Emergency Management, Education Coordinators, ED Leadership etc.

National Pediatric Readiness Project (NPRP) Re-assessment
National Pediatric Readiness Project (NPRP) Re-assessment The NPRP Assessment evaluates a hospitals ED's ability to provide high-quality pediatric care according to the latest national guidelines. Conducted by the EMSC Data Center, these confidential and voluntary assessments are updated with new guidelines and scored on a 100-point scale.

We encourage all partners to take a reassessment to ensure they are up-to-date with the latest standards and continue providing the best care for pediatric patients. Encourage your hospitals to participate, it helps improve pediatric emergency care nationwide! When the facility completes their reassessment, encourage them to save the results as a PDF. Once you close out of the reassessment you cannot go back, you will not have access to the results. Assessment Link


WRAP-EM Cybersecurity Fact Sheet
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant rise in telemedicine usage across healthcare organizations nationwide. This surge in digital care has also brought about increased challenges in securing patient data. WRAP-EM has highlighted cybersecurity as a crucial element in providing safe and effective virtual healthcare services. The research study, conducted by Dr. Tabitha Cheng and Dr. Merritt Schreiber at The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation, focuses on trauma and disaster mental health triage using PsySTART-R. PsySTART-R is a software tool designed to predict post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) risk in contexts like natural disasters and mass shootings. It evaluates 11 risk factors for PTSD without relying on acute stress symptoms. Participants in the study voluntarily complete an anonymous REDCap survey, which takes approximately 5 minutes. The data collected will help develop a pediatric-specific version of PsySTART-R through expert panel input. The data gathered from this study will assist in the development of a pediatric specific version of the PsySTART-R tool via Delphi method with an expert panel of pediatric providers after the initial data collection.

Basic Disaster Life Support
July 31, 2024
The NDLS course will be virtual and offered on MS Teams July 31, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. It is a competency-based, awareness-level course that prepares health professionals for the management of injuries and illness caused by disasters and public health emergencies. This will be the last Statewide BDLS course offered before the August 7 Advanced Disaster Life Support (ADLS) class. BDLS is a pre-requisite to take ADLS. To register please contact Judy Wheeler. Advanced Disaster Life Support
August 7th, 2024
ADLS is a practical, hands-on course which follows BDLS and allows participants to demonstrate competencies in mass casualty management. Working through scenarios such as a mass casualty incident, decontamination, entrapment, and emergency operations center. BDLS is a pre-requisite and pre-course work is required. The ADLS course will be offered at 300 Nazareth Rd., Kalamazoo, MI. Courses open up one (1) month prior to the course date. Contact Judy Wheeler for the enrollment code.

EPESoC will be hosting ICS 300 August 12 – August 14, 2024 in Lansing. Dr. Karla Black from Kent County Health Department and Luke Aurner, Region 6 Healthcare Coalition Coordinator will be teaching the course. ​TEEX MGT. 439: Pediatric Disaster Response and Emergency Preparedness Course
May 29 and 30, 2024
Corewell Health is sponsoring the MGT-439 Pediatric Disaster Management course offered by Texas A&M Engineering Extension Services (TEEX).
The course will be held on May 29 and 30, 2024 at the Michigan State Police, 6th District Headquarters in Walker. Lunch will be provided.
Corewell Health will also be offering this program on October 9 and 10 at Corewell Health Troy. Registration information for that class will be released later this spring.
This course addresses pediatric emergency planning and medical response considerations, needs identified in a 2010 report by the National Commission on Children and Disasters. Based on the needs assessment, a training gap exists for emergency responders, first receivers, and emergency management personnel reducing their effectiveness in responding to pediatric patients and their unique needs/considerations. The course addresses pediatric emergency planning and medical response considerations through a combination of lectures, small group exercises, and a table-top exercise.

​Ceder Creek Hospital of Michigan wants to make the healthcare community aware of an in-patient behavioral health program offering services to teens (ages 12-17). Individualized treatment has an integrated approach to care including meeting with dedicated treatment teams and alternative care options. Please share with your partners especially your Pediatric Champions. This information will be very beneficial to hospital emergency departments who are holding behavioral health patients for days, sometimes weeks, because there are not in-patient beds available.

She is dual board certified in Critical Care and Anesthesiology. Dr Jody Jones is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She works for the Trinity Health System in the IHA Obstetrics and Gynecology program at Cherry Hill Village in Canton, Michigan.

TEEX MGT. 439: Pediatric Disaster Response and Emergency Preparedness Course
May 29 & 30, 2024
Corewell Health is sponsoring the MGT-439 Pediatric Disaster Management course offered by Texas A&M Engineering Extension Services (TEEX).

The course will be held on May 29 and 30, 2024 at the Michigan State Police, 6th District Headquarters in Walker. Lunch will be provided.

Corewell Health will also be offering this program on October 9 and 10 at Corewell Health Troy. Registration information for that class will be released later this spring.

This course addresses pediatric emergency planning and medical response considerations, needs identified in a 2010 report by the National Commission on Children and Disasters. Based on the needs assessment, a training gap exists for emergency responders, first receivers, and emergency management personnel reducing their effectiveness in responding to pediatric patients and their unique needs/considerations. The course addresses pediatric emergency planning and medical response considerations through a combination of lectures, small group exercises, and a table-top exercise.

This course prepares students to effectively, appropriately, and safely plan for and respond to a disaster incident involving children, addressing the specific needs of pediatric patients in the event of a community based incident. Pediatric specific planning considerations include mass sheltering, pediatric-triage, reunification planning and pediatric decontamination considerations. This is not a hands-on technical course, but instead a management resource course for stakeholders like pediatric physicians, emergency managers, emergency planners, and members of public emergency departments like EMS, Fire, Police, Public Health, and Hospitals in field of disaster response and preparedness work.​

The Region 8 Healthcare Coalition will be hosting the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Services (TEEX) MGT 439 course on September 25 and 26. It is an excellent 2-days of learning. The course will be held at the Island Conference Center in Harris, MI. Hotel accommodations are available on-site.
