The Detroit Communicable (CD) Program is requesting assistance from healthcare providers in response to a recent rise in hepatitis A activity in SE Michigan. The Detroit Health Department is asking that any person who has had direct contact with sewage back-up see their primary care provider and be offerd the appropriate vaccination or prophylaxis as clinically indicated. Please also see the attached document "Hep A Provider Qustions Detroit 8.25.16" for guidance on qustions to ask your patients. Also, a cluster of 10 people have been infected at Tropical Smoothie Cafes across the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Virginia Department of Health has issued a warning that frozen strawberries imported from Egypt likely contained the virus. CDC is interested in receiving serum specimens for genotyping from any person with acute hepatitis A reporting smoothie or frozen fruit consumtion with illness onset on or after June 1, 2016 (and no known foreign travel). At this time, MDHHS is asking Detroit Area clinical labs to save hepatitis A positive specimens in the event they are needed for forwarding to CDC. As a reminder, you must notify Detroit Communicable Disease Program at 313-456-3347 if your facility has a potential positive hepatitis A case. Please contact that number for any additional questions. Attachment: Comments are closed.
