Subject: Carfentanil Awareness Statewide Conference Call 9-29-2016, 2-3:30 PM
Carfentanil Awareness in Michigan
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS)
Bureau of EMS, Trauma and Preparedness
The national opioid crisis has become more challenging due to an increase in the incidence of potent substances being mixed with heroin. Most notably, this includes fentanyl, carfentanil, synthetic opioids, and methamphetamine. Just recently, the Kent County Sheriff’s Department obtained drugs that most likely contained Carfentanil. These substances often require special considerations in their clinical management For the EMS community and non-medical first responders, the advent of these high potency opioids is cause for heightened situational awareness and a reiteration of the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE).
MDHHS, Bureau of EMS, Trauma and Preparedness (BETP) will be hosting a statewide conference call on Thursday, September 29th from 2 – 3:30 pm for hospital and Emergency Services personnel (agenda attached).
*** Since this is a statewide call, participants are encouraged to identify a location in which multiple staff can participate if possible to avoid facilities not being able to access the call due to high call volume.***
