The Macomb County Health Department has been investigating cases of cyclosporiasis associated with catered events held June 9-11, 2017 in Macomb County and surrounding areas. No specific food item has been identified as the cause of the illnesses. However, food items served at the events included fresh fruits and vegetables, which have been previously associated with cyclosporiasis (https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/cyclosporiasis/outbreaks/foodborneoutbreaks.html).
Local health departments will be notified within the next day of hosts that have been identified in their jurisdiction. The caterer has reported events in Oakland County, St. Clair County, Lapeer County and the City of Detroit. Local health departments are asked to contact the hosts in their jurisdiction and ask about any illnesses associated with their catered event. Hosts who report illnesses associated with their event should be asked to forward the attached fact sheet to their guests and encourage any ill individuals to seek appropriate testing and possible treatment.
The Macomb County Health Department sent the attached MIHAN notification to health care providers in Macomb County.
If you have any further questions about the investigation, please contact the Macomb County Health Department Environmental Health Services Division at 586-469-5236.
