Subject: Updated MERS-CoV Guidance for Michigan LHDs and Healthcare Providers
MDCH updated the MERS-CoV Guidance that was previously issued on 10/30/2013. This guidance is intended for use by local health departments and providers in evaluating the potential for MERS-CoV infection, defining a Patient Under Investigation (PUI), obtaining specimens and authorization to test, storage and shipping, infection prevention and control, and home isolation for discharged PUI. Future updates will be issued as guidance from CDC is updated and if MERSCoV severity, activity, or transmission changes.
This HAN is being sent to providers; however, MDCH is asking that all LHDs share with providers in the jurisdiction to ensure coverage.
New/updated in this guidance:
There are currently three MERS-CoV cases identified in the US: IN (1), FL (1), IL (1). MDCH continues to test PUI and identified contacts of MERS-CoV cases. All tests at MDCH BOL have been negative for MERS-CoV. Many of the persons in Michigan evaluated and tested for MERS-CoV have tested positive for Influenza B. Please contact MDCH Division of Communicable Disease for questions on evaluating suspect MERS-CoV cases, for submission of PUI forms, and for authorization of testing at 517-335-8165 (phone) or 517-335-8263 (fax).
