​CMS Publishes Final Rule on Fire Safety Requirements for Certain HealthCare Facilities

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a final rule (https://www.federalregister.gov/public-inspection) to update health care facilities’ fire protection guidelines to improve protections for all Medicare beneficiaries in facilities from fire.

The new guidelines apply to hospitals; long term care (LTC) facilities; critical access hospitals (CAHs); inpatient hospice facilities; programs for all inclusive care for the elderly (PACE); religious non-medical healthcare institutions (RNHCI); ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs); and intermediate care facilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ICF-IID).

HHS Publishes Two Reports on the Lessons Learned during the 2014-2016 Ebola Response

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced the publication of reports on the lessons learned during the 2014-2016 Ebola response.  The Secretary of HHS asked a nonprofit research organization, CNA, to review the Department’s international and domestic responses to the Ebola Response. It convened an independent panel of subject matter experts to identify strengths and opportunities to improve the Department’s preparedness and response efforts.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Environmental Protection Agency Urge Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to Consider Aerial Spraying as Part of Integrated Mosquito Control to Reduce Zika-Associated Birth Defects

Acting on data from multiple scientific studies in Puerto Rico that show that Zika is spreading rapidly and is a major risk to pregnant women and their fetuses, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommend the people and the government of Puerto Rico consider implementing aerial spraying as part of an integrated mosquito control program.

CDC Releases Detailed History of the 2014-2016 Ebola Response in MMWR

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today will release a detailed account of the agency’s work on the largest, longest outbreak response in the agency’s history: the Ebola epidemic of 2014-2016. The series of articles, in a special supplement to CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), comes on the second anniversary of the official activation of the agency’s emergency response to Ebola.
