The Primary Investigator is Dr. Steven Krug from Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. The study is looking for 2-3 hospitals in Michigan to participate. Corewell Health and Michigan Medicine have partnered to recruit rural hospital participation from within their own healthcare systems. There are no asks from the Coalitions. This is just for your information so if you receive any questions, you are aware of the study. If you have any questions, please contact Lauren Korte ([email protected]). The AAP will be offering guidance for pediatric health care teams on how best to work together to ensure the highest quality of care for children with surgical problems. According to research, the number of pediatric hospital medicine programs involved in caring for surgical patients increased from 44% to 90% between 1997 and 2020, and about 40% of pediatric surgery and 60% of pediatric orthopedic programs use co-management for patient care. It can be found in the document library under Regional Network > Resource Sharing > Operational Guidelines/Plans/Regions >. From the National Pediatric Disaster Coalition: FEMA National Preparedness Report 2023 Several actionable opportunities stand out from this report. #1 The need to improve personal preparedness. Only 45% of surveyed adults stated they were prepared for a disaster. Children rely on their caregivers to prepare for disaster. #2 State, Local, Tribal, and Territories (SLTT) are expected to conduct FEMA's Integrating the Needs of Children Workshops in their communities. The training program developed by FEMA in 2021, is basically a local emergency manager-led community training promoting integration of children’s needs during emergencies. Check with your local or district emergency manager to see if they are hosting a workshop and if you can participate. It may be a great opportunity to learn of community needs you are not aware of. WRAP-EM is considering conducting a series of multi-HCC chemical or pediatric surge virtual tabletop exercises to validate annexes/plans as was hosted by WRAP-EM in 2022-23. The exercises would be held in the February-April 2024 timeframe. In addition to fulfilling Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) requirements, there are potential benefits for HCCs to share and learn from each other by participating jointly in a virtual tabletop exercise. The playbook is NOT intended for rapid pediatric surge responses such as a mass casualty incident (MCI). Take a look at the Playbook and see if there is anything to strengthen Pediatric Medical Surge Plan. Pediatric Surge Playbook Checklist of Essential Pediatric Domains for Hospitals One of the most significant gaps in hospital readiness for children is the lack of hospital policies that address children under every day and disaster conditions. Is your community hospital in that situation and needs help including children in preparedness policies? This resource will help! The Checklist of Essential Pediatric Domains and Considerations for Every Hospital’s Disaster Preparedness Policies is a tool to help hospital administrators and leadership incorporate essential pediatric considerations into existing hospital disaster policies. Click to download (PDF) and view the following video that explains the checklist from colleagues at the American Academy of Pediatrics Disaster Council. Pediatric Disaster Response and Emergency Preparedness (MGT-439) September 25-26, 2024 The Region 8 Healthcare Coalition is pleased to offer Pediatric Disaster Response and Emergency Preparedness. The course addresses pediatric emergency planning and medical response considerations through a combination of lectures, small group exercises, and a table-top exercise. It prepares students to effectively, appropriately, and safely plan for and respond to a disaster incident involving children, addressing the specific needs of pediatric patients in the event of a community based-incident. Pediatric specific planning considerations include mass sheltering, pediatric-triage, reunification planning and pediatric decontamination considerations. This is not a hands-on technical course, but instead a management resource course for stakeholders like pediatric physicians, emergency managers, emergency planners, and members of public emergency departments like EMS, Fire, Police, Public Health, and Hospitals in field of disaster response and preparedness work. For more information and to register for this course visit MI-TRAIN, course number 1055362. MI-TRAIN Registration Instructions Strategies to Include Maternal and Child Health in Emergency Planning This blog post from the Association of State and territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), in partnership with CDC’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) discusses inclusion of maternal and child health (MCH) in infectious disease emergency preparedness and response in states and territories. Those interviewed described experiences in different jurisdictions and emergency responses. It is worth noting that there were common factors across various types of jurisdictions including the need for sustainable funding to support collaboration, intentional inclusion of MCH programs and staff in emergency response, improved data quality and surveillance systems, and open communication with partners and the public. WRAP-EM WEBINAR: Kids in Crisis – Mental Health & Emergency Departments Time: 8:00 a.m. start and 5:00 p.m. end, with 1 hour lunch (noon-1:00 p.m.) The Western Regional Alliance for Pediatric Emergency Management (WRAP-EM) is conducting an initiative to address the ongoing crisis of youth mental health surge within hospital emergency departments (ED). This initiative is focused on providing support to hospital EDs (and associated partners) in their mitigation and management of the significant mental health surge from pediatric populations. These would include, but are not limited to, topics of mental health boarders who have a broad category of issues leading to mental health crises, including acute trauma, suicidal ideation and attempts, neurological or developmental disorders, significant disruptive and aggressive behaviors, and the kids with “nowhere else to go". The second webinar in the series is a solution-focused webinar featuring subject matter experts across the country to address specific challenges, provide tools and resources, and answer questions from attendees. This will take a broad perspective, to include the continuum of care leading up to referral to the hospital ED, the ED experience, and ED disposition - in addition to addressing this challenge via insights and tools from policy, strategic/systems, and clinical lenses. Audiences: Hospitals and healthcare, ED and Primary Care. Primary care pediatricians and family practice physicians, 988 lines and administrating organizations (likely state orgs in this list), local/state mental health departments, mental health coalitions and associations, healthcare coalitions (HCCs), local/state public health departments, Developmental Disabilities Administration, Child Protective Services, Department of Social and Human Services.
