Updated Disaster Behavioral Health (DBH): Resources at Your Fingertips
When disasters strike, the ripple effects can be significant. Incorporating disaster behavioral health (DBH) into all phases of emergency management can ensure resident and responder preparedness, an effective, compassionate response effort, and a more resilient community moving forward. ASPR TRACIE recently updated one of their documents to provide information on and links to select DBH programs and resources that can be of immediate use to emergency health care providers, emergency management stakeholders, and other professionals and survivors affected by naturally occurring or human-caused incidents.

Behavior Health Program for Teens (ages 12-17)

Ceder Creek Hospital of Michigan wants to make the healthcare community aware of an in-patient behavioral health program offering services to teens (ages 12-17). Individualized treatment has an integrated approach to care including meeting with dedicated treatment teams and alternative care options. Please share with your partners especially your Pediatric Champions. This information will be very beneficial to hospital emergency departments who are holding behavioral health patients for days, sometimes weeks, because there are not in-patient beds available.

American Hospital Association (AHA) Podcast: Better Behavioral Health Care Through Collaboration and Virtual Care
In the U.S. health care system, the demand for behavioral health care has long outpaced availability, with many patients forced to turn to their primary care providers for help. To find a solution, Henry Ford Health System decided to get creative with a new collaborative care program that for the first time integrated primary care with behavioral health. In the latest episode of the AHA's Advancing Health podcast, four clinicians from Henry Ford discuss the beginnings of the program and how collaboration and technology have made it easier to see patients than ever before.

92 Minutes: A Suicide Presentation for First Responders

10/26/2023

November 17, 2023

On Friday, November 17, 2023, the Barb Smith Suicide Resource & Response Network is hosting two Suicide Prevention Training for our First Responders at the Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn Lodge. The titles of the training are: 92 Minutes: a suicide presentation for first responders and Start the Conversation: a suicide presentation for healthcare & behavioral health providers (onecause.com).  This is a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Registered Training Opportunity.

The guest speakers are Kevin Briggs and Kevin Berthia. An estimated 700,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year and suicide continues to be a leading cause of death. For first responders, this means it is likely they will encounter individuals who experience thoughts of suicide. The additional stresses brought on by the demanding nature of this work contribute to compassion fatigue and burnout. During this training session, attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from a caregiver and the man he helped through skilled and empathetic communication.

This presentation will give attendees both crisis intervention skills to adequately work with persons suffering from thoughts of suicide, as well as specific tools and skills to manage their own self-care post intervention.
