Did you know 80-90% of people with mental health disorders are treatable by utilizing various treatment therapies, medications, services, and supports? Youth Mental Health First Aid is a course that helps individuals with First Aid training to recognize the early signs of mental health disorders. By recognizing these signs early on, appropriate response and action take place before the problem turns into a crisis. 1
On March 29, 2017 Region 7 Healthcare Coalition hosted a Youth Mental Health First Aid course. The course was taught by Joanie Blamer and Cynthia Peterson of Northern Lakes Community Mental Health.  The attendees consisted of HCC Staff, Hospital Administration, Hospital Pediatric Management, First Responders, and Faith Based Community Members. Individuals from each of the disciplines brought new experiences and perspectives into the discussion, which made for an eye-opening educational experience. Participants also had the opportunity to use subject matter from the course to engage in hands on group activities and scenario based exercises.

Course attendees learned about mental health disorders and associated risks, protective factors for resiliency, and how to follow an action plan and locate community resources for treatment and support. They gained enough knowledge and information to assist a person showing symptoms of a mental health illness or experiencing a mental health crisis until appropriate professional help can be obtained.

In the second part of our Youth Mental Health First Aid series, we will go further in depth into some of the warning signs and risks as well as treatment plans and options. We will further identify community resources specific to Michigan. Part 3 of our series will wrap up what we’ve learned in parts 1 and 2 with a disaster and response focus.
