Calling all Youth! FEMA Seeking Leaders for Youth Preparedness Council

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is looking for students in grades 8 through 11 interested in supporting disaster preparedness to join the FEMA Youth Preparedness Council (YPC). The online application is now open, and closes March 4, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. A Special Invitation from the NYC Pediatric Disaster Coalition

The New York City Pediatric Disaster Coalition (PDC) is once again hosting a new webinar - “Coaching the Champions for Pediatric Readiness”. The webinar will take place via Zoom on March 6, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. ET. 
The webinar will feature the following topics and distinguished speakers (speaker bios can be found by clicking the link below):

• The National Peds Ready Program and Survey (for EDs and EMS), Matthew Harris, MD
• The Always Ready for Children (ARC) program, Amy Eisenhauer
• The role of the ED and EMS Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC), Mark X. Cicero, MD

Pediatric Case Conference: Hosted by Munson Medical Center’s Pediatric Readiness Team

This one-hour call is on March 11, 2024, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. is focused on Community Acquired Pneumonia in Children — Beyond the Usual Viral Causes
Learning Objectives:

• Outline, highlight and discuss the presentation of pediatric respiratory disease in children.
• Differentiate and discuss the common clinical presentation of respiratory disease by age of patient.
• Establish a differential diagnosis of respiratory illness beyond viral causes.
• Briefly consider treatment plans for common causes of pneumonia.

Pediatric Champion Office Hours
March 26, 2024
The March Pediatric Office Hours will offer two 1-hour sessions, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on March 26, 2024, on maternal emergencies and how to reduce mortalities. Presentations will be by Dr. Melissa Bauer and Dr. Jody Jones. Dr. Melissa Bauer an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Duke University. She is dual board certified in Critical Care and Anesthesiology. Dr. Jody Jones is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She works for the Trinity Health System in the IHA Obstetrics and Gynecology program at Cherry Hill Village in Canton, Michigan. More information to come.

TEEX MGT. 439: Pediatric Disaster Response and Emergency Preparedness Course
May 29 and 30, 2024
Corewell Health is sponsoring the MGT-439 Pediatric Disaster Management course offered by Texas A&M Engineering Extension Services (TEEX).
The course will be held on May 29 and 30, 2024 at the Michigan State Police, 6th District Headquarters in Walker. Lunch will be provided.
Corewell Health will also be offering this program on October 9 and 10 at Corewell Health Troy. Registration information for that class will be released later this spring.
This course addresses pediatric emergency planning and medical response considerations, needs identified in a 2010 report by the National Commission on Children and Disasters. Based on the needs assessment, a training gap exists for emergency responders, first receivers, and emergency management personnel reducing their effectiveness in responding to pediatric patients and their unique needs/considerations. The course addresses pediatric emergency planning and medical response considerations through a combination of lectures, small group exercises, and a table-top exercise.

​TEEX MGT. 439: Pediatric Disaster Response and Emergency Preparedness Course
September 25 and 26, 2024
The Region 8 Healthcare Coalition will be hosting the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Services (TEEX) MGT 439 course on September 25 and 26. It is an excellent 2-days of learning. The course will be held at the Island Conference Center in Harris, MI. Hotel accommodations are available on-site.

Registration is open, please follow the steps below to register:
First step - go to the TEEX student portal. Create account by clicking "create Account" on the right side of the page.
Second step - Once the account is created click the TEEX Online Registration link.
Follow the instructions, click the check box indicating that you reviewed the acknowledgements, take the pre-test, and download course materials.


State Plans Available in MIHAN for Review
During 2023 and 2024, the Bureau of Emergency Preparedness, EMS and Systems of Care has been working hard to complete plans and training for Healthcare Coalitions and other partners to use in their own planning and training. Please review the documents in the MIHAN for resources that may be useful.  Currently, all documents are found under “Resource Sharing”, “Operational Guidelines/Plans/Regions”.  Updated documents with their titles are found in the picture below:
