Michigan Zika Key Messages
  • The mosquitoes that transmit Zika virus are not in Michigan.  Several counties in the state are conducting mosquito surveillance for Aedes vectors of Zika, as of July 22, 2016 none have been detected.
  • Michigan will continue to identify cases of Zika virus in residents who travel to areas where Zika virus is being transmitted locally.
  • Pregnant women should not travel to areas with active Zika transmission. If they must travel, they should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.
  • For non-pregnant women and men who travel and experience no symptoms, it is recommended they prevent pregnancy for at least eight weeks after their return.
  • For men who return from travel and do have symptoms, it is recommended they use condoms for six months after their return.
  • Men who have a pregnant partner and have been in an area with Zika transmission should either use condoms the right way every time they have sex, or not have sex for the duration of the pregnancy.
  • Official guidance for Michigan birthing hospitals is now available from MDHHS

Michigan residents can avoid mosquito bites when traveling by taking the following precautions:
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors.
  • Take precautions to avoid bites both during the day and in the evening. The mosquitoes that transmit Zika bite primarily during the day.
  • Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other EPA approved product to exposed skin or clothing, always following the manufacturer’s directions for use.
  • Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
  • Sleep under a mosquito bed net if you are overseas or outside and are not able to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
